Vanity of vanities

Yesterday I was visiting a shut-in who from time to time has asked to receive tapes of the worship services. It is flattering to think that someone wants to hear what I have to say. She starts to tell me one of the things she likes about my sermons, and I start to prepare myself to receive a compliment.

"You say what you have to say and then you stop."

So one of the best things about my sermons is that they end.

Enough said.

When I was a child, I used to love the hymn that starts with "Praise Him from whom all blessings flow."

I still like that hymn and it warms my heart whenever I hear it.

A couple years ago I had to laugh at myself when I realized that the reason I always liked that hymn is it's what our congregation sang at the end of the service. Hearing it meant church was over.
